This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller stands strong even without a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though the lead actress achieves to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, Film4
