Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
